My Story
Hello!I'm David Brickner. Welcome to my website - a collection of images and stories I have gathered over the past 10+ years of exploring with a camera in-hand. I was born and raised in Minnesota, but it wasn't until my 20's that I began to understand the depth of beauty this state has to offer.

My journey into wildlife photography began in 2011 on a family trip through Yellowstone. I had recently purchased my first DSLR camera - a 10 megapixel Canon Rebel XTi. While I didn't walk away with any portfolio-worthy images, something changed in me on that trip. Our final evening was spent watching a large grizzly bear forage with her cub along the shores of Yellowstone Lake. My love for nature photography was awakened and over the next five years I traveled back to Yellowstone as often as I was able.

Since that trip 13 years ago, my life has undergone many changes. I got married, became a father, completed a master's degree, and transitioned to a new career. Yet, through it all, wildlife photography has remained a constant thread in my journey.

In 2020, feeling restless in my one-bedroom apartment, I was inspired to venture up the Gunflint Trail for the first time in search of my first Minnesota moose. I was successful, and that trip sparked a deep love for the boreal forests of northern Minnesota, one that has since grown into an insatiable obsession.

Since then, I've made countless trips to the Gunflint, traveling thousands of miles, paddling remote lakes, and exploring rugged backroads. It’s an incredibly challenging yet rewarding place for photography. Moose, in particular, have become a central focus of my travels. I find them to be a powerful symbol of our state, and with their population in rapid decline since the early 2000s, every sighting feels like a rare gift.

Through these adventures, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing some of my most fulfilling moments as a photographer, and they've opened doors for sharing my work with others. For the past three years, I’ve had the honor of teaching a beginning photography course at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN. My work has been featured in several publications, including The Boundary Waters Journal, Northern Wilds Magazine, Bluefin Bay Resort’s yearly calendar, and a short video clip of a moose in an Explore Minnesota ad.

Yet, what I find most rewarding is how photography fosters connection—connection to God, the earth, wildlife, other photographers, specific places, and to oneself. It’s a grounding experience that draws awareness into the present moment and deepens my focus on the subject or scene that is before me.

I’m deeply grateful for those who have taken a moment to engage with my work—whether through purchasing a print or calendar, reading a blog post, or simply browsing through my images. Your support and appreciation mean more than words can express.
